How To Guide: Celebrating A Fake Holiday, Real Girl Style

13 Feb

Over the cheesy gift roundups. Not in the mood to share a tear-jerking novella. No romantic poetry. Sure, I do indulge in these things from time to time – guilty as charged. But NOT today…

Middle fingers up to Cupid and Hallmark. Here’s to ditching labels and eye-rolling at fake holidays. For my ladies who’d prefer a night in with a bottle of red, or an evening out with gal pals and loads of laughter, over a cliché bouquet of roses…

HAPPY FUCKING VALENTINE’S DAY!

  • .5 oz. Grenadine
  • .5 oz. Lemon juice
  • .5 oz. Grapefruit juice

Spring is in the air! Sunshine and blue skies inevitably accompany a craving for fresh and fruity cocktails. I.W. Harper Bourbon Whiskey has provided a couple perfect recipes for this time of year. Had lots of fun making (and drinking) them while enjoying a lovely Saturday on the porch with my dear friend Liz.

Two top-notch options for a seasonal social gathering — picnics, backyard bbq’s or even a Kentucky Derby party (that’s where this wonderful whiskey originates from, after all).

Cheers and enjoy!

When all else fails, book a fancy hotel room (on credit, if you must – it’ll cost about as much as a therapy session in NYC), and enjoy an evening in with your favorite girls.

Take a bubble bath, order four bottles of champagne, wrap on up in cozy robes and let your worries float away.

Cry, bitch, laugh, sing, dance…do whatever you have to do to let go. Even if the escape is only temporary.

Feeling empty? Well there are countless ways to fill up on endorphins (sparkling wine is a good place to start). Stress is the catalyst for so many real-life ailments, and negative energy is highly contagious disease that nobody wants to catch.

Easier said than done, perhaps, but we must try and set ourselves free every once in a while, and embrace things that enable a more restful state of mind.

When I get lost, I remember my road trips…sticking my head out the window, with the music blasting, closing my eyes and letting the wind blow through my hair. These were the times when I allowed myself to feel life, like a beating pulse, rather than stumble along like a zombie off course.

I’ve certainly had my fair share of “moments”, where crying feels like the only possible release. But it is really important to remember those other times…the times when you you couldn’t help but smile, even if you tried super hard to keep a straight face. Just writing this is making me smile, because I am grateful for my friendships and the wonderful memories I’ve made so far.

We all deserve a night off from time to time. When the road gets rocky it’s easy to forget that it’s OK to escape for a second. There are endless opportunities for enjoyment out there, we just have to be willing to embrace them.

CHEERS.

So excited to share this very special feature, in collaboration with I.W. Harper and Frederic Malle! I happen to be quite seasoned when it comes to sipping on spirits, so working with I.W. Harper always makes for a fun time (check out my previous post about Holiday Cocktailing for some delicious ideas). However, as much as I love and have a strong appreciation for the art of perfumery, I’ve always been too indecisive to pick out my “signature scent”.

I.W. Harper and Frederic Malle went went above and beyond in setting up this amazing experience. Frederic Malle offers an uncompromising approach to fragrance creation, assisting customers in finding their ideal perfume, with the help of their highly trained and approachable team of experts. They’ll steer you in the right direction, paying close attention to the specific notes and combinations you’re naturally drawn to – whether it be a bolder scent, or something light, clean and fresh.

I was graciously paired with an incredible woman, Dinara Tuleuova, who taught me so much! Ms. Tuleuova walked me through the process, step by step, in a way that wasn’t intimidating for a newbie like myself. She made me feel comfortable while asking thoughtful and relevant questions. It was an educational and enjoyable experience, which ultimately led to my to finding that perfect perfume, En Passant…a selection undeniably inspired by the chic, retro appeal of I.W. Harper whiskey!

While there are many amazing options, I fell for this refreshing combination of white lilac, orange leaves, cucumber and wheat. And all throughout the selection process, I was able to enjoy I.W. Harper cocktails…a pretty magical afternoon!

I’ve always been intrigued by perfume and and the power it holds. A complimentary fragrance can be the finishing touch to an outfit, the best accessory for a silk negligee, or even worn on its own (yes, in the absence of clothing), if you are looking to create an irresistibly seductive atmosphere. Add I.W. Harper’s classic whiskey with a modern twist to the mix, and prepare yourself for one seriously lustful scenario!

‘Tis the season for holiday parties — from intimate gatherings with a few friends to full-on social soirées. Had the pleasure of teaming up with I.W. Harper, the historic American bourbon company, and my “French wife” Céline and I enjoyed a late afternoon of testing out a few recipes that are perfectly delicious to sip on this time of year.

I’ve just recently become a bit of a whiskey girl, but these recipes are delicious enough for just about anyone to enjoy! Definitely worth trying, and I.W. Harper is the perfect option to add that extra special touch of deliciousness…

While I would like to consider myself a cocktail connoisseur, I am actually just really good at drinking delicious beverages. These two recipes, however, are so easy to make, super smooth, and are sure to satisfy any crowd…

THE DARK MAPLE

  • 1.3 oz. I.W. Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • 1 oz. Maple simple syrup
  • 4 oz. Ginger Beer (I am actually 100% hooked on this stuff now)
  • .5 oz. Lime

Fresh, light, and just a tad sweet. The Dark Maple is strong, and sure to get your crowd in mingling mode! But, at the same time, by no means “over the top” as far as boozy beverages go.

SEASONAL HOT TODDY

  • 1.25 oz. I.W Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
  • 1 tsp. fine grain suger
  • 2 small clove(s)
  • 1.5 oz. boiling water

Baby, it’s cold outside. A good hot toddy is my go-to this time of year, and this simple recipe is nothing short of sublime. I swapped out fine grain sugar for cute little rock candy stirring sticks to add a fun, festive touch!

Happy holidays, drink up, sip responsibly, and enjoy I.W. Harper and these crowd pleasing recipes!

Last summer I chipped my kneecap riding a bicycle home from the beach at 3am in Cape May, NJ. Nobody was on the street, I was not steering to avoid some sort of road block…I just shot straight into the curb. At the time I felt it to be really important to go super-duper fast, realizing at the last moment that I was taking a wrong turn.

I crashed and burned and bled and cried. I am clumsy and irrational. I am reckless. I do stupid shit every day. But, post-collision, I stood up, got on the bike, and rode home. At least this is one act I’ve managed to make a habit of…getting back on my feet and moving forward.

I could make an analogy here about relocating to Paris, but if you’ve seen my Instagram, or have been following my journey for the past month, I shall spare you (for the sake of avoiding redundancy).

Change isn’t easy. We all hit bumps in the road (or perhaps some of us take it a step further and spaz out, flying face-first into the pavement after drinking too much red wine from a water bottle). Either way, the important thing is to just keep on going.

Do I regret moving here? Not at all. Do I regret the time fell off my bike like a freaking fool? Not in the least. I can honestly say it was one of the best nights of my life.

I went skinny dipping in the ocean, under a full moon, on a beautiful, empty beach. I laughed so hard and have memories that will stick with me forever. I am almost happy I have the scar to remind me of that night because it was just that special.

So here you see me standing in cute clothes by Roots, walking a very adorable bike in NoLita (one I wouldn’t dare ride on the streets of Manhattan, that’s for sure). The outfit makes me very excited for the fall weather that has already hit Paris, while at the same time evoking a little New York City nostalgia.

But, as Amelia Earhart would say, ” Everyone has ocean’s to fly, if they have the heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries?”

At the end of the day, nothing cures those lonely blues like happy, silly memories… at any given moment they’ll stick with you, wherever in the world you happen to be.

Today is officially my one month Pariversary! I threw caution to the wind (yet again) and moved out here on a whim, not really knowing what to expect. But my experience thus far only confirms my belief that this is, at least for me, the best way to truly experience life.

Do things that are daunting, and welcome the unexpected with open arms. Occasionally you might get punched in the face, but more often than not, with the right attitude, you’ll find that the unexpected will actually hug you back super hard.

Absorb what different cultures have to offer and let every single sight and sound sink in. Become friends with the locals (even if they are cats). Life is chaotic, but it is important to follow your heart, take risks, step out into the unknown, and remember to take some time for yourself…some time to stop and smell the roses.
